What is numerology?

Numerology is the study of the occult meanings of numbers and their influence on human life.

At its simplest, many cultures consider some numbers to be lucky or unlucky.

Examples include:

  • Seven, considered lucky by most cultures, but not the Chinese; to them it has connotations with the dead (for example, the Festival of the Hungry Ghosts is on the Seventh Lunar Month)
  • Thirteen, considered unlucky by most Western cultures, because Judas Iscariot, the disciple and betrayer of Jesus, was the thirteenth man in the room in which Jesus ate his Last Supper.  However, thirteen is considered lucky in Italy
  • 666, the Devil's number
  • 9413, considered unlucky by Chinese because it sounds like a Chinese proverb which means 'slim chance of survival' or literally, 'nine die one lives'

This belief in numbers is very strong in some countries.  In the USA and Canada, for example, the thirteenth floor of a building is often missing.  In China, lucky phone numbers such as 133-3333-3333 or 8888-8888 have been sold for large sums of money.

Numerologists believe that every letter in the alphabet has a specific essence that can best be described by associating it with a numerical value, thereby allowing for ease of computation.

Letters are assigned numeric values from 1 to 9.

Each letter in any given word helps to add a particular flavour in order to clarify its meaning: this is especially so when it is the first letter or multiple occurrences of a particular letter are found in a word.  The premier, or first, consonant or vowel of a word tends to carry significant importance and these letters will often reveal the overall essence of a word or name.

What is a Numerology Reading?

Numerologists can produce a 'reading' for you, just as astrologers, biorhythmists and Myers-Briggs can – you may be amazed at how 'accurate' the reading is!

It all starts with your name and birth date.  They are the database from which a numerologist is able to describe you, sight unseen.  Number values are assigned to the letters in your name.  By adding these – with the numbers in your birth date – in a multitude of combinations, a numerologist establishes your key numbers.  He then interprets the meaning of these key numbers, which results in a complete description of your personal characteristics.
